A Memorial

“The Mighty One, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘YHWH, the Mighty One of your fathers, the Mighty One of Abraham, the Mighty One of Isaac, and the Mighty One of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.” Exodus 3:15

Moses, a fugitive from Egypt, has spent time rehabilitating his life doing the work of a shepherd.  When out one day, he sees a bush burning, but not being consumed.  If you’ve seen “The Prince of Egypt,” or “The Ten Commandments,” the scene might be familiar to you.  YHWH speaks to Moses through the Bush, telling him what his task is before Pharoah (let my people go!).  When he asks “Who should I tell them is sending me,” YHWH responds, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you… YHWH, the mighty one of your fathers, The Mighty one of Abraham, the Mighty One of Isaac, and the Mighty One of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.” Exodus 3:14-15

YHWH is his name FOREVER.  The name YHWH is a memorial to all generations!  A memorial is something that, by definition, is to be remembered.

In the United States, we have a memorial every 4th of July.  Fireworks, hot dogs, and cheesy patriotic music serve to remind us of the signing of the declaration of independence.  NOBODY forgets – and if you did, all the fireworks would remind you pretty quickly!

But his name, his MEMORIAL NAME, his NAME FOREVER, has been not only forgotten, but erased and replaced by a title – “the LORD.”  Even here where he tells Moses his name, in most bibles, his name is erased and replaced!  Take a look at your bible!  Or, if you want to compare a bunch of bibles, check out Bible Gateway. Most bibles have replaced his name – his name that is FOREVER.
