“How long is this there in the heart of the prophets, the prophets of lies; yea, the prophets of the deceit of their own heart? They plot to cause My people to forget My name by their dreams which they tell, each one to his neighbor, even as their fathers have forgotten My name for Baal (Lord)” – Jeremiah 23:26-27
Here in Jeremiah, YHWH is talking about a plot concocted by evil prophets. In Hebrew, the word Ba’al means “Lord,” as in ones master – a generic title. But Ba’al is also the name of a foreign Mighty One that the people of Israel kept trying to worship. Here, the evil prophets conspire to teach the people of Israel to forget the name of YHWH, and instead call him Ba’al, or Lord.
Even here in Jeremiah the plot is not new. It says that their fathers forgot his name for Ba’al (Lord) as well. The fact that most people today do not know his name but instead refer to him as “the Lord” shows that many have fallen for the deception. The evil one has used this trick in the past, and is using it again with great success. He knows that “All who call on the name of YHWH will be saved.” – Joel 2:32. If they don’t know his name, who will they call on? They will call on ‘the LORD,’ but that is not his name. It’s a generic title, and the English translation of a great enemy of YHWH. (Read 1 kings 18:20-40)
